The rumour mill around the next big Apple launch has ramped up in anticipation of the next model iPad. March 7, 2012 is the general thinking, followed by in-store availability in the US from around March 16. Availability down under could be any time from that date through to March 30.

Will it be iPad 3, iPad 2S or even iPad 2 HD?

Apple may not even call it iPad 3… from the rumours that are circulating it looks like the product will be an evolution rather than a revolution, so it might be iPad 2S, or even iPad 2HD in a nod to its predicted HD display. So what are the expected features?

Anticipated Features

The iPad 3 is widely tipped to have a new 2048-by-1536 pixel Retina display. That alone is a big step up from the current model.

A quad-core A6 processor, up from the current dual core. This will help drive the new display smoothly and provide more grunt for graphics-intensive apps, as well as smoother scrolling and faster web experiences.

Better cameras are likely to be offered, with a 5- or 8-megapixel rear camera and a Facetime front camera.

Siri is likely to make an appearance, offering the same voice control as the iPhone 4S.

The iPad 3 may or may not have 4G LTE capability – the tipsters are in two minds about this, so we’ll have to wait until March 7 to be sure.

iPad 3 Mini?

Apple may launch a 7″ screen version to take on the lower end of the market and Kindle Fire in particular. We may also see the current model retained at a lower price point for the same reason – so if you’re in the market for a cheap tablet, hold on because the competition is really heating up!

What will iPad 3 cost?

Certainly the production costs will be higher if a retina display, quad-core processor and an upgraded battery (to feed the greater power demands of those features) are all included. However Apple have sold a gazillion iPads and have a significant war chest with which to take on the competition so we’re tipping similar pricing to existing models, with iPad 2 continuing at a lower price point.

And for a short time, we can offer them at just $499 (RRP is $599) – limited stocks are available so be quick.

With unique design features (and a unique look!), they deliver stunning sound. Here’s what AKG (and Quincy) have to say:

Sparkling harmonics, incredibly low distortion and unequalled realism in the lower frequencies – it’s the huge, airy, three-dimensional sound available only in the finest high-end speaker systems and microphones. Now, we’ve engineered it into the most accurate and responsive reference headphones we‘ve ever produced, the Q 701.

Q 701′s employ flat-wire voice-coil technology, our patented Varimotion multilayer diaphragm, and the AKG neodymium magnet system for sparkling high-frequency signal tracking and a distortion-free bass response. Combined with true bi-wiring in the motor assembly, Q 701′s produce balanced stereo separation and excellent imaging in an immersive soundscape of unequalled realism.

‘These are the only headphones I’ve heard that bring out the true sound we were striving for on records like “Billie Jean”‚ “Thriller” and “Give Me the Night“. It’s the best-quality sound I’ve heard, ever.’

– Quincy Jones

Download the AKG Q701 specification sheet

If you’re in the market for some seriously good cans, come in or call us on (07) 3552 7000 before the price goes back up to normal RRP.

Rega have introduced two new turntables, the RP3 and RP6, that cement Rega’s place as a leader in turntable innovation and quality.

The Rega RP3, available now in three colours at $1,099, pushes the performance envelope at its price point, thanks to features such as:

A hand assembled RB303 tonearm

A low vibration, low noise 24v motor assembly individually hand tuned to its circuit to further reduce vibration

A super light weight plinth combined with a phenolic resin double brace to form a structurally sound “stressed beam” assembly

The light weight plinth and double brace assembly is designed to reduce mass and therefore reduce the loss of music energy into the structure. The end result is very impressive and well worth a listen!

If the budget extends further, the Rega RP6, due out in Feb at an expected price of under $2,000, goes a step further.

The Rega RP6 adds an external power supply and a 16mm glass flywheel platter, and is available in 8 high gloss finishes. This new model has been highly antipated among vinyl lovers, we can’t wait to get our hands on it! If you’re interested, drop us a line on (07) 3552 7000 or via sales@livingsound.com.au and we’ll let you know when it arrives!
